Dr. Kavita Sharma’s Breastfeeding Guide: What Every New Mother Should Know

Bringing a baby into the world is a beautiful journey — but let’s be honest, it also comes with new responsibilities and challenges. Breastfeeding is one of the most important — yet most overwhelming — experiences for new moms. As a gynecologist, I’ve seen many mothers feel confused or unsure during the early days of nursing. That’s completely normal.

Here’s my expert guidance to help you start breastfeeding with confidence, comfort, and care.

🍼 1. Start Early — Within the First Hour

The first hour after birth is known as the “Golden Hour.” Your baby is alert and naturally ready to latch. Early skin-to-skin contact helps release oxytocin, boosts milk supply, and builds emotional bonding.

🌼 2. Colostrum Is Nature’s First Vaccine

That thick, yellowish milk in the first few days? It’s called colostrum — and it’s packed with antibodies and nutrients. Even a few drops are powerful for your baby’s immunity. Don’t worry if it seems like “too little” — it’s exactly what your baby needs at that stage.

🧘‍♀️ 3. Stay Calm and Comfortable

Choose a quiet space. Sit with back support and a pillow if needed. Breastfeeding works best when both mom and baby are relaxed. Stress and pain can affect milk flow. Don’t hesitate to ask for help from nurses, lactation consultants, or your doctor.

🕰 4. Feed On Demand, Not by the Clock

Newborns may feed every 2–3 hours, or more frequently. Look for signs like rooting, sucking on hands, or fussiness. Every baby’s feeding pattern is unique — follow your baby’s hunger cues.

🤱 5. Ensure a Good Latch

A poor latch can lead to sore nipples and low milk transfer. Make sure:

  • Baby’s mouth is wide open

  • Chin touches the breast

  • Most of the areola is inside the mouth
If you're in pain, gently break the latch and try again.

💧 6. Stay Hydrated and Nourished

Your body needs extra fluids and balanced nutrition to make milk. Drink water regularly, include protein, healthy fats, and traditional lactation-boosting foods like:

  • Fenugreek (methi)

  • Cumin (jeera)

  • Garlic

  • Oats

  • Ghee in moderation

🛏 7. Take Rest and Accept Help

Your recovery matters too. Nap when the baby naps, and don’t hesitate to lean on your partner, family, or postpartum support. Your mental and physical well-being directly affects breastfeeding success.

⚠️ 8. Know When to Seek Help

See a doctor or lactation expert if you notice:

  • Cracked, bleeding nipples

  • Baby not gaining weight

  • Very short or very long feeds

  • Pain during or after feeds

  • Persistent low milk supply

Early support can prevent complications like mastitis, blocked ducts, or nipple trauma.

👩‍⚕️ Dr. Kavita’s (MBBS, DGO) Final Words:

Breastfeeding is a learning process for both mother and baby. Be kind to yourself. Every feed, even if imperfect, is an act of love. Don’t compare your journey with others. With patience, support, and the right guidance, you will find your rhythm.
